Keeping Family Close: Building an ADU for Aging Parents

A family reached out to us after a series of difficult conversations.
The husband’s mother had begun experiencing frequent falls in her home. Nothing severe had happened yet, but the risk was becoming more serious. Living alone was no longer comfortable for her or for her family.
They wanted her closer to them so they could help when needed. At the same time, they also wanted to preserve her independence.
Moving her into the main house was one option, but the layout made that difficult.
They began exploring the idea of building an ADU.
The Challenge: Independence and Safety
Families in this situation often face a difficult balance.
Parents want independence. Adult children want peace of mind.
The solution needed to accomplish several things:
- Provide a safe living environment
- Keep her close enough for daily support
- Maintain privacy for everyone involved
An ADU allowed the family to achieve all three.
Designing an ADU With Accessibility in Mind
When building an ADU for an aging parent, the design needs to prioritize safety and ease of movement.
In this project, several features were incorporated into the layout:
- No interior steps or elevation changes
- Wide doorways for easier mobility
- A walk-in shower with seating
- Grab bars placed in key areas
- Lever-style door handles and fixtures
Lighting was also an important factor. Well placed lighting reduces the risk of falls and makes the home easier to navigate.
These details may seem small, but together they create a space that feels safe and comfortable.
Maintaining Independence While Staying Close
One of the most important outcomes of the project was preserving the mother’s independence.
She now has her own living space with a bedroom, bathroom, and small kitchen. She can enjoy her routine while still being only a few steps away from family support.
For the homeowners, the peace of mind has been significant.
If help is needed, they are nearby.
If privacy is needed, the ADU provides that as well.
Why More Families Are Exploring ADUs for Aging Parents
Situations like this are becoming more common.
As families think about long-term care for parents, many want solutions that keep loved ones close while avoiding the need for assisted living facilities.
ADUs can offer:
- A safer living environment
- Reduced fall risks through thoughtful design
- Immediate family support when needed
- A private living space for aging parents
When designed properly, an ADU can support both independence and safety.
Planning for the Future
One interesting aspect of this project was the long-term perspective.
Even though the ADU was built for the husband’s mother, the homeowners also recognized that one day they might benefit from the same kind of accessible space.
Planning ahead allowed them to create a home that supports multiple generations over time.
In many cases, an ADU becomes one of the most valuable additions a family can make to their property.
